HIPEC

Cancers, which have spread to the lining surfaces of the peritoneal (abdominal) cavity from primary colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer, gastric cancer, appendiceal cancer or from mesothelioma and pseudomyxoma peritonei–known as peritoneal carcinomatosis- are among the most difficult to treat cancer types.

Although numerous advances have been made in chemotherapy during the last years, the overall chance of chemotherapy being curative is still not high, and it is difficult for the patient to endure the side effects. Yet, HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) can be regarded as an option for patients if these cancers are existent only in the peritoneal cavity.

As the term “Intraperitoneal” suggests, the treatment is delivered to the abdominal cavity. And as the solution containing chemotherapeutic agent is about 42 C degrees, which is greater than the normal body temperature, the procedure is named as Hyperthermic Chemotherapy.

Prior to the administration of HIPEC, all visible tumours located in the peritoneal cavity are removed by a surgeon using regular surgical methods. This procedure is named as cytoreductive surgery. HIPEC is administered in the operative setting following the cytoreductive surgery by the surgeon.

During the HIPEC administration, a heated sterile solution, which contains a chemotherapeutic agent, is perpetually circulated throughout the peritoneal cavity for a maximum of two hours. This HIPEC procedure aims at killing any remaining cancer cells, which can’t be removed surgically.

As a result of this procedure, the drug is better absorbed and also the rest of the body is exposed to the drug minimally. Thus the common side effects of the chemotherapy can be avoided.
