BURNS

What are the types of burns?

As the types and severity of the burns differ, pain resulting from burns might be difficult to treat. Burns can be classified as 3 types.

First-degree burns are milder than other types of burns. As a result of them, pain and reddening of the epidermis might occur.

Second-degree burns affect both the epidermis and the dermis. These kinds of burns cause pain, redness, swelling and blistering.

Third-degree burns, going beyond the dermis, affect the tissues of deeper parts of the body. They result in white or blackened, charred skin, which might be numb.

What are the causes of burns?

Most common causes of the burns are fire, steam, hot liquids, radiation, friction, heated objects, the sun, electricity, and chemicals.

The most common type of burns is thermal burns. They occur as a result of the contact of the skin with flames, hot metals, scalding liquids or steam. Many different reasons, such as house fires, vehicle accidents, kitchen accident or electrical malfunctions may cause burns.

How are burns treated?

The treatment of a burn varies according to the type of burn. Yet, it’s of crucial importance to keep all the burns clean and apply adequate dressing on them basing their severity. The management of pain is important since insufficient control adversely affects wound care. Besides, the condition of the wound must be reassessed to observe signs of infection other long term problems, such as scarring and tightening of the skin.

Antibiotic ointments or aloe vera creams can be used for the treatment of first degree burns. In order to protect the burned area, a dry gauze bandage might be applied on the skin. Some pain medicines can relieve the pain arising from the burn.

For the treatment of second-degree burns, antibiotic creams or ointments prescribed by a doctor can be used.

The process of skin grafting or the use of synthetic skin might be necessary for the treatment of third-degree burns. For the treatment of severe burns that cover larger parts of the body, the use of intravenous antibiotics or intravenous fluids might be needed to prevent infection and replace the fluids lost as a result of the burn.
